Loewen uses thicker glass than most other window manufacturers, making our products more insulative, more soundproof and more resistant to impact. Plus, our thicker glass is considerably more resistant to the stresses caused by fluctuations in temperature.
Loewen windows and glass inserts for doors are available with numerous glazing options: Heat-Smart® Window Systems, Tranquility® sound reduction system and StormForce™ Series. Loewen Heat-Smart® Window Systems use argon gas and Low E2 technology to save you heating and cooling costs. Each of three Heat-Smart® Window Systems delivers a different level of thermal performance, allowing you to choose the system that best meets your needs.
Standard Loewen glass is available in both double and triple configurations and with a variety of coatings to manage solar heat gain. These result in different visual tints.
When considering energy efficient triple glazing, you'll want to ensure that you receive Loewen's TrueTripleTM glazing. Consisting of two full half-inch airspaces, it the ultimate performer in sealed unit technology.

HEAT-SMART® WINDOW SYSTEMS
Heat-Smart® Window Systems offer three levels of thermal protection. The charts below show the comparative performance of each Loewen window system and will help you better understand their benefits.
Learn more about thermal design.

HEAT-SMART®, X
Good. Double glazed, with one layer of Low E² coating and one 1/2" air space filled with argon gas*.
HEAT-SMART® T, XT
Best. Triple glazed, with two layers of Low E² coatings and two 1/2" air spaces filled with argon gas*.
Heat-Smart® Window Systems also protect furnishings by screening out much of the damaging ultraviolet rays that enter the home. This reduces fading and related damage.
ADDITIONAL GLAZING STANDARDS
-
Loewen uses 1/8" double strength glass, giving vast improvement to strength, durability and clarity over thinner glass.
- All standard sealed units feature machine applied butyl primary sealant and polyisobutyl secondary sealant. This reduces the chance of seal failure, improves argon gas retention and increases strength.
- Minimal use of exposed exterior caulking on glass surface for a clean, aesthetically pleasing appearance.
- All standard Loewen sealed units are argon gas filled with no spacer bar piercing*.
- Glazing fabrication is automated.
- Our automated glazing assembly line allows robots to excel at what they do best — precise, repetitive tasks — and lets our skilled operators concentrate on issues of quality and performance. The robotic line creates Loewen sealed units with the glass in a vertical position, which prevents the irregularity caused by deflection (glass sagging during production) that can rob units of their hermetic seal over time.
- Specially treated glass designed for southern exposures and hot climates is available.

R-Value (U-Value) Measures the resistance of heat transfer through the glass. Higher R-Value (lower U-Value) indicate greater insulating capabilities. R-Value (U-Value), measured at center of glass. |

UV Transmittance Measures the percentage of ultraviolet radiated wavelengths allowed to be transmitted through the glazing system. |
TRANQUILITY® GLAZING SYSTEM
Loewen windows offer above-average sound attenuation, the result of our thick glass and superior fit and finish. For problem applications, we’ve developed an upgraded glazing system that offers even better sound transmission performance.
Tranquility® Glazing Systems greatly reduce sound transmission into or out of the room in which they are installed.
- Tranquility® Glazing Systems consist of a 1/4" (6 mm) pane of glass on the exterior, a 13/16" (21 mm) air or argon filled space, and a 7/32" (6.5 mm) pane of laminated glass on the interior.
- Tranquility® Glazing is available on all Loewen products that can be made in a triple glazed configuration.
- Operating casement units test out at STC40 (no storm panel is required to achieve this rating).
- Laminated glass used in the sealed unit provides increased security.
- The laminated glass used in Tranquility® helps to filter out damaging ultraviolet rays.
Tranquility® Glazing offers solutions to traffic and other urban noise, and can even effectively combat noise pollution in airport "sound footprints."
SOUND TRANSMISSION CLASS (STC)
The STC rating is a way to measure the performance of a glazing system using a single number that represents the Sound Transmission Loss performance over a range of frequencies. The higher the number, the greater the noise reduction.
***Ashrae calculated values Window 4.1. 12mm airspace (0.5 inches). Does not apply to sealed units with capillary tubes installed.
Information shown in the charts compares the center of glass performance levels of the sealed unit only when manufactured with different glazing options offered by Loewen. It is not representative of overall window performance, which depends on many factors including grille options, such as simulated divided lites, or grilles between glass, product size and configuration. This information cannot be used to calculate energy consumption, to determine resistance to condensation or to develop assumption about suitability for use or compliance with any energy code. For overall performance of specific windows or doors, refer to Performance section of the website or the “NFRC U-Factor and SHGC/VT” information as published in the Loewen Technical Guide.
**Tranquility® available on product configured for triple pane only.
